The Birth House

image

I just finished reading The Birth House, which is a story of a young girl and her journey as a midwife in small-town Nova Scotia in the early 1900s.  The story follows Dora through her life as she trains, helps all kinds of women with all kinds of “women’s issues”, becomes an outcast in her village, becomes a wife and mother, and tries to fight for women’s rights in the face of the medicalization of birth.  The story is an amazing account of the relationships between women, the sanctity of childbirth, and life in small-town Nova Scotia during the first World War.  This has been one of my favourite reads lately, and I highly recommend it, especially to mothers!
