The Secret Daughter

I haven’t posted about Book Club in a while because I was a bad student and did not read the last 2 books.  One of them I started and just could not get into, and the other one I was afraid to read because of the subject matter.  I thought I would find it disturbing, and still being in that emotional post-partum phase I didn’t think I could handle it.

Our most recent read was The Secret Daughter by Shilpi Somaya Gowda.  It is about a woman in India who secretly gives up her baby girl to an orphanage, because her husband does not want a daughter.  The story follows the mother’s life after giving up her daughter, and it also follow’s the daughter’s life as she gets adopted by Americans.  I thought the story was really well written, and I loved the picture that the author painted of India.  I also thought the themes were well developed (motherhood, adoption, poverty, inter-cultural relationships, and family) but I found the plot of the story to be a bit cheesy, especially in the end.  Overall, I think it is a worthwhile read.
